How much room do you have?

Your TFSA room starts the year you turned 18 or became a tax resident of Canada, whichever came later — not 2009 for everyone.

You

Usually the year you arrived to live here, not the year you got PR. Unsure? CRA on residency for newcomers

A free account keeps what you put in and take out, at every bank, and says what comes back on 1 January.

An example: born 1991, a tax resident since 2021. Type your own years.

You have $39,500 of TFSA room.

You

CRA’s account shows TFSA room as of 1 January and adds last year’s transactions only in the spring, so from January to about April it can show more room than you have.

Contribution Room estimates your contribution room from the rules the Canada Revenue Agency publishes and what you enter. It is not tax, legal or financial advice. Your CRA account and Notice of Assessment are the official record: check them before you contribute, and ask a tax professional about residency or anything unusual. Contribution Room is not affiliated with the CRA.

US citizens and green-card holders: a TFSA is generally not tax-free in the US; ask a cross-border tax professional first.

What an account keeps

The calculator answers once. An account keeps the answer true as the year goes on: you log what goes in and comes out, and Contribution Room redraws every step.

  • Your whole household. Each person with their own years, side by side, on one page.
  • Every contribution and withdrawal. At every bank, with the day it happened, so the room is yours and not a guess.
  • What comes back on 1 January. A TFSA withdrawal is room again next year, not this one; Contribution Room shows which.
  • TFSA, FHSA and RRSP together. The RRSP limit from your Notice of Assessment, the FHSA from the year you opened it.
  • A note each 1 January, if you ask for one, once the new year’s limit is announced.
  • Your assistant, too. Contribution Room speaks MCP: an AI assistant you allow can read and log for you, and you can take that back.

How the room is counted

  1. TFSA room starts when you do. A step for every year from the one you turned 18 or became a tax resident of Canada, whichever came later — not 2009 for everyone.
  2. A withdrawal comes back next year. Take money out of a TFSA and that room returns on 1 January. Putting it back the same year uses new room.
  3. The FHSA opens when you open it. $8,000 a year from the year you open it, up to $40,000 in all; unused room carries forward, at most $8,000 of it.
  4. The RRSP is CRA’s number. Copy the deduction limit from your latest Notice of Assessment. In your first years here, Contribution Room works it out from what you earned.

The TFSA limit, year by year

Someone who has been an adult resident since 2009 has $109,000 of room from 2009 to 2026. Most newcomers have far less: only the years since they arrived count.

Not CRA’s record

Contribution Room is an estimate from CRA’s published rules and what you type. Where your CRA account or Notice of Assessment says otherwise, they are right.
